Children Crusade for Haiti
As I drove in to work around 8:30 a.m. this morning, I listened to the sound of children crying on the radio. It was the voice of orphans who had just suffered the aftershock of a magnitude 6.1 earthquake a few hours earlier. These same children received water for the first time yesterday from relief crews, but just enough for one day.
Next week, January 25, 2010, the Missionaries of Our Lady of Divine Mercy are going to reach beyond our border to Haiti to bring mercy to these children. Their cries for help have been heard and America is listening.
Perhaps the most encouraging story I can share with you is about a group of children who decided to get involved. The oldest child, Danny, just 11 years old and a student at our local Catholic School, along with his friends as young as 5 years old, decided to make a difference.
Last week when many children had the day off from school, these kids gathered together and worked on raising money for Haiti by holding a bake sale at a local Safeway store. Raising nearly $500, these children are a witness to how even the smallest members of society can make a difference.
When I met with Danny this morning, I praised him for his courage to get involved. Our ministry is in great need of financial donations to help the poor people in Haiti and in our community. Danny’s efforts will have a direct impact on those who have been ravaged by this tragedy.
The gift that Danny and his friends gave me was more than just financial. It was a witness to me that hope lives on and that mercy can triumph out of tragedy.
